Although he was the heir-apparent to David’s throne, Amnon is best remembered for the rape of his half-sister Tamar, daughter of David and Maachah.
Jewish law forbids sexual relations between half-brothers and sisters. (Leviticus 18:11) However, in his desire for her, Amnon took advice from his cousin, Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, to pretend to be sick and thereby to lure Tamar into his quarters. Tamar was invited on the pretense that Amnon wanted her to cook a special meal for him. Ignoring her protests, he raped her.
This led to his death two years later by the order of Absalom, his half-brother and Tamar’s full brother. Absalom avenged his sister by sending his servants to kill Amnon at a feast to which he had invited all the king’s sons. (2 Samuel 13)
Old testament - BIBLE
The other Tamar was not raped - she was married in turn to Er and then, when widowed, to his younger brother Onan and had children by their father Judah - she seduced the old man.
